About Krug

Krug occupies a singular position in Champagne. Where the other prestige hôuses produce a range from non-vintage to rosé to vintage to tête de cuvée, Krug essentially makes only prestige wines. The Grande Cuvée (released as multi-vintage with the edition number on the label since 2011) is itself a blend of 100+ wines from 12+ vintages, fermented partially in small old oak barrels. Vintage Krug is released only in exceptional years and aged at least 12 years in cellar before release. The Clos du Mesnil (single-vineyard Chardonnay) and Clos d'Ambonnay (single-vineyard Pinot Noir) are the maison's two singularly site-expressive wines. Krug winemaking uses traditional Champagne methods extended: long lees aging (10+ years), use of small oak barrels for primary fermentation, deliberate oxidative aging. Acquired by LVMH in 1999 but operates with substantial editorial independence under the Krug family's continued management.

Editorial notes

Practical guidance

Krug Grande Cuvée edition numbers (e.g., ‘Edition 169’) indicate the reference vintage year of the blend — a useful aging signal. Vintage Krug typically benefits from 15-25 years cellar. All Krug bottles are individually numbered.
